Winter X Games Aspen 2019 athletes revealed

More than 75 Olympic athletes competing in 17 disciplines have been invited to X Games Aspen 2019, it was announced Wednesday. Those athletes were included in a total of 82 first round invitations to compete at Buttermilk Mountain Jan. 24-27.

All medalists from X Games 2018 with sport disciplines that are returning received an automatic invite for Jan. 2019, the announcement continued.

Aspen-bred freeskiers Alex Ferreira, Olympic silver medalist, and Torin Yater-Wallace, received invitations as did snowboarder Chris Corning, who trained with Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club as a junior. Aaron Blunck of Crested Butte, Gus Kenworthy of Telluride and two-time Olympic gold medalist in halfpipe skiing David Wise were among the early invitees as well.

The men’s ski superpipe final is Thursday, Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. It’s followed that evening by women’s snowboard big air at 9:15 pm.

The much decorated Shaun White, reigning Olympic champion in snowboard halfpipe, as well as his counterpart on the women’s side, Chloe Kim, were in the first round of invitees.

Men’s snowboard superpipe is Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Women’s snowboard superpipe is Saturday at 8:45 p.m.

The contests will air on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, “international syndication partners,” and most social and digital media platforms.
